Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
    Isaiah 60:1-6
    Psalm 72:1-2,7-8,10-13
    Ephesians 3:2-3,5-6
    Matthew 2:1-12

A Reflection on today's Scripture:

I've always loved the story about the Three Wise Men. It intrigued me
even as a child to look at the plaster statues of them with their
coffers, amphora and richly laden camels. However, it wasn't until
today that I realized what a tremendous thing it was that Three Kings
or Wise Men would travel such an incredible distance to pay homage to
a newborn baby. It would be like walking from Miami to New York to
see a young mother with her newborn baby and then turning right
around and walking back to Miami. Put in that context, the faith of
the Three Wise Men was surely no less than divinely inspired. They
weren't even Jews so they didn't even have a vested interest in the
declarations that he was the Messiah. This familiar and lovely
recounting of what occurred hundreds and hundreds of years ago gives
us a wonderful opportunity to assess just how well we pay homage to
that newborn king.

So, what precious gifts do we bring to lay at the Christ Child's
feet?

Dearest Lord as we contemplate the testimony of the Three Kings, let
me consider how fully and perfectly I offer myself to you. May I give
you my life, my will, my soul - the only truly valuable commodities I
possess. May my prayers and actions arise like frankincense to give
you honor and praise. May I subject my human nature in humility and
obedience as you subjected yours, so that I may become more holy in
your sight. With these threefold gifts, may I walk the many miles of
my life until I can see you face to face and lay them in homage at
your feet.

                   "All that I am,
                        all that I do,
                        all that I'll ever have
                        I offer now to you."
