Title: Meditation: Wednesday, January 23, 2002
The Catholic Calendar for Wednesday, January 23, 2002
The Second Week in Ordinary Time
Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
1 Samuel 17:32-33,37,40-51
Psalm 144:1-2,9-10
Mark 3:1-6
A Reflection on Today's Scripture:
We are always in trouble when we are blind to the will and power of
God. The Philistines place all their security in the brute strength
of a bully. They feel invincible with Goliath as their leader. But
God catches them off guard -- how could a mere slender youth without
sword or spear even dent the shield of the giant? Humility pierces
arrogance; trust pierces presumption. In the Gospel, Jesus is angry
at the tunnel vision of those who ignore the clear sign of divine
mercy. In their desire to trap Jesus on a legality, they fail to
appreciate the tender concern of Jesus for the physically maimed.
May we always keep our ears and hearts tuned to the challenge of
divine power, and allow Him to work His Will. How dangerous and rash
to oppose the Almighty! To oppose the justice and mercy of God is to
risk our eternal happiness.
In this week dedicated to Christian Unity, let us pray for sincere
efforts on the part of the Churches to listen, pray, and discern the
pathways to oneness in Christ.
