Title: Meditation: Sunday, February 3, 2002

The Catholic Calendar for Sunday, February 3, 2002
The Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
    Zephaniah 2:3;3:12-13
    Psalm 146:6-10
    1 Corinthians 1:26-31
    Matthew 4:1-12

A Reflection on today's Scripture:

Digesting the scripture read at Mass today might be considered food
enough to fathom the greater part of the Christian message.
For example:

Seek the Lord, all ye meek of the earth.  (Zep 2:3)
The Lord raises up those that were bowed down.  (Ps 146:8)
The weak things of the world has God chosen,
to put to shame the strong.  (1 Cor 1:27)
Blest are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.  (Mt 5:3)

You get the picture! How easily we drift from such humble state, taken
in by the world's promise of immense power, knowledge, wealth, longevity
- practically immortality! The media bombards us with images and sound
bites of the cool, the hip, the famous, the slender, the young, the
pleasurable things to do, even the immoral. That's the world.

We were taught by Jesus to be kind, merciful, compassionate, caring; to
love the Lord with all our hearts by loving the least of our brothers;
to be forgiving - without counting the number of times. Let us never
cause others distress by ignoring their pleas or their feelings.
Instead, let us live the Gospel to its fullest; let us be glad and
rejoice with all the saints and angels, for our reward is in heaven.

              O Lord, open our hearts,
that we might hear the words of your Son.
                             Amen

- Joachim, ocds
