Title: Meditation: Sunday, February 17, 2002
The Catholic Calendar for Sunday, February 17, 2002
The First Sunday of Lent
Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
Genesis 2:7-9,3:1-7
Psalm 51:3-6,12-14,17
Romans 5:12-19
Matthew 4:1-11
A Reflection on today's Scripture:
On This first Sunday of Lent we are treated to a scriptural review of
our human condition, how we fell from grace, and how grace was made
possible again. This is our annual retreat from the things of this
world, and a search into our own souls using the probing light of
scripture and the Church's guidance.
Today, we need to focus on the fact that we =are= sinful! Having
been smothered with a liberal amount of propaganda by the liberal
mainstream media, we find it rather difficult to believe that we are
sinners. The notion that a little selfishness doesn't matter, is
something that we must abandon if we are to be saved by God's grace.
In today's Gospel we see that even Jesus was tempted by the devil.
The devil even quoted scripture, trying to dissuade Jesus to weaken.
Jesus showed us how to remain steadfast in living the desire of the
Father: do not desire the attractions of this world for yourself, but
offer your life on behalf of others. Doesn't that describe Jesus?
Isn't that what we need to do?
Have mercy on me, O God, in your goodness;
in the greatness of your compassion
wipe out my offense. - Psalm 51:3
- Joachim, ocds
