St. John of God
Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
Hosea 14:2-10
Psalm 81:6-11,14-17
Mark 12:28-34
A Reflection on today's Holy Scripture . . .
Raising a family of nine children, the words "How many times must I tell
you....." echo in my ears as I recall the many times my wife and I spoke
them to our children. The Psalmist is exhorting us to hear the voice of
God. How can we hear the voice of God? The only answer to that, is to
listen -- with peace and love in our heart!
Our God speaks to us so powerfully today in these scriptures. As we
listen to the words of the Prophet Hosea, he is almost begging us to
come back to Him. He assures us of His healing touch, if we would but
turn back to Him. Freely He offers His love to us, the love that knows
no boundaries. Jesus reminds us again of the greatest commandment, to
"love the Lord your God with your whole heart, soul, mind, with all your
strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself!" God simplified the law
He gave to Moses -- and still we fall short!
Here we are at the mid-point of Lent. Do you think our God is saying
"How many times must I tell you?" and "Come back and let me love you and
forgive you". Do we hear Him saying to us "Thou art not far from the
kingdom of God." (Mk 12:34) Now is the time for us to come back to Him
with all our heart.
O God,
give me patience,
The kind of patience that you show us
as you wait for our return to you!
Amen.
