Title: Meditation: Tuesday, March 12, 2002

The Catholic Calendar for Tuesday, March 12, 2002
Tuesday of the Fourth Week of Lent

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
    Ezekiel 47:1-9,12
    Psalm 46:2-3,5-6,8-9
    John 5:1-3,5-16

A reflection on today's Scripture . . . .

"Dost thou want to get well?" (John 5:6)

Who doesn't?  Why would Jesus ask such a question?

The ugly truth is that most of us don't really want to be healed.
Being healed might mean giving up favorite sinful pleasures. Being
healed might mean abandoning former friends.

Being healed might mean actually listening to and obeying the
teachings of the Church. It might mean discomfort, difficulty,
discipline. Being healed might cost us a lot of what we truly love:
pleasure, self-indulgence, selfishness.

But beneath this surface we have painted on, there is a part of each
and every one of us that desperately wants healing, that can truly
say "yes" to Jesus when he asks that question. There is a part of us
that really wants to give up these things we have become too attached
to.

Lent is a time of new beginnings. It is a time to start anew.
Sometimes we have to make up our minds each day to start anew. But
that is okay, because we are still saying "yes" to Jesus. As hard as
it is, if you're asked in your heart today: "Do you want to be
healed?" answer with a Joyous YES! And tomorrow, and for as long as
it takes. Jesus is the healer!
