A Reflection on Today's Scripture:
We never know how really strong our faith is until it is tested. The
dear Sisters told us years ago in Catholic school that we should
never worry about facing martyrdom. Would we have the strength not to
betray our Lord? We were told that God would strengthen us in that
hour. In Graham Greene's novel, The Power and the Glory, the poor
Mexican priest who despises himself for his unfaithfulness to his
priestly vows (he has fathered a child out of wedlock), is
nevertheless given the grace of martyrdom for his faith, and is shot
by a firing squad. Finally he is free in his own conscience, and goes
to his death with dignity. It was his finest hour.
We may never have to face martyrdom, but we are often called to
refuse to compromise our principles. We may even suffer financial
loss or social disgrace or the contempt of those close to us by such
an heroic decision. But we will know better what it means to be a
loyal follower, for the truth of our faith will match the truth of
ourselves, and that truth will set us free.
