The Catholic Calendar for Wednesday, May 22, 2002 Seventh Week in Ordinary Time Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word: James 4:13-17 Psalm 49:2-3,6-11 Mark 9:38-40 A Reflection on Today's Scripture: The words of James today admonish us against arrogant boasting of what we're going to do tomorrow and tomorrow for the Lord....while we expect our listeners to gasp in amazement at our heroic bravery. Truly, such behavior is sheer bravado! As James reminds us, only God knows where or if we will be tomorrow, much less really carry out our boasting. It is God alone who grants us life, ability, and the ability to serve Him. In the Gospel, Jesus tells his disciples, in effect, that He doesn't depend on them alone. They are not to think jealous thoughts of others who work in His name. "Whoever is not against me is with Me!" With humility, gratitude, and, above all, obedience to the Will of God, let us humbly do today what God's grace prompts and enables us to do...all else is presumption, all else is vanity! - Msgr.
