Title: Meditation: Wednesday, June 5, 2002

The Catholic Calendar for Wednesday, June 5, 2002
    Ninth Week in Ordinary Time
    St. Boniface, bishop and martyr

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
    2 Timothy 1:1-3,6-12
    Psalm 123:1-2,
    Mark 12:18-27

A Reflection on Today's Scripture:

Along with many, many others, I studied theology in preparation for
priesthood at St. Bernard's Seminary in Rochester, N.Y. It was
nicknamed "The Rock" because of its policies on strict discipline of
its founder, Bishop McQuaid. Truly, it provided a rock-like basis for
a sturdy faith in vocation and mission. St. Paul, with his rock-like
faith, is encouraging Timothy, who may be reeling under attacks on
his message. "Stir up the gift of God that is within you through the
laying on of hands", Paul says to Timothy. How all priests need to
hear that word today as we, too, reel under the scandals that beset
the church, and the attacks of some who would love to see the
authority of our Church silenced.

Let us encourage one another with prayer, words of faith, and deeds
of loving reparation. May our Church experience healing and
purification through the perseverance and fidelity to the mission
entrusted to us. It is the experience of Christ in his humiliation
and suffering. As His blood was shed to purify the world of sin, so
too may our tears and patience shed our Church of sin and
re-establish her as the pure bride of Christ.
