Title: Meditation: Sunday, June 23, 2002

The Catholic Calendar for Sunday, June 23, 2002
The Twelth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
    Jeremiah 20:10-13
    Psalm 69:8-10,14,17,33-35
    Romans 5:12-15
    Matthew 10:26-33

A reflection on today's Scripture:

Jesus said: "Whoever disowns me before men, I will disown before my
Father in Heaven."
This message, heard at Masses this weekend around the
world, should be our cue to examine our thoughts, speech and behavior.
Regrettably for some of us, being a Catholic is nothing more than some
sort of "magic." We go through the motions of religion and hope that
we'll be "saved." We attend church because 'we gotta do it' and obey
civil laws out fear of being caught if we do otherwise.

If we could take a panoramic snapshot of the wider picture of life and
creation, we would see that the things about which we so narrowly focus
so much of our attention, are indeed, a total waste of our time. How
infrequently we dwell on the purpose of our existence and where we are
going with it. Instead, things like fun, pleasure, sex and wealth are
the only focus of our pursuits.

If only we would disconnect ourselves from the tentacles of the media,
and instead spend that same time reading and meditating on scripture and
other quality spiritual reading, then we would begin to live with God in
our hearts. If we pursued that way of life, we would easily and boldly
proclaim to all that Jesus is our Lord!
