The Catholic Calendar for Wednesday, July 17, 2002 Fifteenth Week in Ordinary Time Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word: Isaiah 10:5-7,13-16 Psalm 94:5-10,14-15 Matthew 11:25-27 A Reflection on Today's Scripture: A wonderful lesson in today's readings! God used Assyria as the rod of His anger against sinful Judah. Assyria, who ruled for over 300 years over a vast kingdom, devastates this southern kingdom, yet takes all the credit to itself. Proud and arrogant, the Assyrian emperor incurs the wrath of God who, in turn, destroys the power of Assyria. When we serve as a channel for God's purposes, we must take care not to let pride and self-righteousness corrupt our usefulness to the Almighty. If we preserve a simple humility, attributing all success to divine power rather than our own, then God's wisdom, given only to the childlike, will keep us in His favor. - Msgr.
