Title: Meditation: Wednesday, July 24, 2002

The Catholic Calendar for Wednesday, July 24, 2002
    Sixteenth Week in Ordinary Time

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
    Jeremiah 1:1,4-10
    Psalm 71:1-6,15-17
    Matthew 13:1-9

A Reflection on Today's Scripture:

Jeremiah had a true vocation -- a call, a mission, to do not what he
wanted to do, but what God wanted him to do. He was scared,
frightened, but also honest and innocent. God saw that he could work
through Jeremiah, and that was enough.

How do we prepare for our vocation?

By daily preparing the soil of our minds and hearts so that God's
seed, His Word, may be planted there securely, and will flourish. We
may not even know of the fruitfulness of our ministry. We may think
we are failing miserably. But, if the soil is right, God's word can
go forth from us without hindrance, and bring about His Will in
ourselves and in others. It is all for the glory of the Kingdom, and
not for self-aggrandizement or credit. Can we be content with that?
