Gmail does not recognize dots as distinguishable characters within usernames (mailboxes). (It also does case folding.)
Right, and the canonical form is whatever you typed when you signed up, e.g., mine has one dot in the middle and no upper case. This just confirms that you can't tell from the outside what an MTA does internally.
