Well once - in my twenties - I put up a billboard in my
front yard -- 8 foot x 4 foot (just within the legal size for
a home made sign - but also within my first amendment
rights) the sign said:
"I do not recommend
________ Construction
Company"
They did threaten to sue me for slander -- (liable?) they did
have the city check to see if my sign was legal - it was the
same size as the one that they had previously had there
saying "Another remodel by_____ Construction Company"
They did refund out money -- They did cancel the contract -
they did give us all the money so that we could pay the
sub contractors and get contractor's liens released. And
they did give me a written apology before I gave them the
sign......
Our home was on a very busy street -- And the sign did
end up on the news and in the newspaper.....
NOW -- be careful -- as much as you would like to
tell everyone how mad you are -- take a breath and tell
them that you have no comment beyond the sign --
I know that some of the people that came and asked
questions were from the contractor ..... I know I could
have gotten myself in trouble if I had gone beyond
the sign.....
I know of another person who did the same thing with
a placard and marching up and down in front of the
business -- nothing but a sign that said "I think I was
really screwed by this company" -- (sorry for the
"screwed")..... I was told that one was okay because
we are allowed to say what we think -- so saying
I did mine after having the roof taken off for a second
story -- and no roof and no heat after 13 months......
We had two small kids -- one house (then in ruins) - and
not able to afford a lawyer -- I figured what did I have
to lose?
