Julie,
There is a wonderful piece of equiptment for starting dogs on tunnels.  You
make it out of PVC pipe.  It will be square, of course, not round, but you
start with one hoop, and get the dog to go through.  THen add a second hoop,
then a third, you get the idea.  It is very open, and you can make the hoops a
size that your dog will be comfortable with to start.  As training progresses,
you lower the hoops so the dog begins to crawl a bit.  Eventually to the size
of the tunnel, then place fabric over the hoops.  This helps the dog learn to
go into the proper position without having to deal with the confinement of the
tunnel.  Later when the fabric is added, no problem!
