Please, before you give him up to a shelter, have
your vet look for tattoos and microchips.

Unfortunately "many" vets and shelters ~do not~
have the equipment to scan for chips. I have seen
many dogs not find their homes because of the lack
of this equipment! We actually found out thru horses
that the slaughter houses did not have the scans nor
were they required to do so. We are still working on
this. Just when we thought we had found something
to save our animals, only to find out what good is
it, if the receiving end does not have the scanner.

A friend of mine adopted a dog from a shelter, upon
visiting her, it was 'quite' obvious that this dog had
come from some very fine lines of breeding.

I asked if this shelter had scanned for chips, we
both went back and they did 'not' have the equip.

I took this dog to my vet and we scanned him.

He was chipped!!!

I cannot tell you the tears of joy we had when
we re-united this dog with his owner.

Lost dogs can travel farther away from their
homes than one thinks.

If you chip you dogs, take the time to see if
vets and shelters around your town have the
equipment to scan. A few phones calls to these
people can save you dogs life.

In our town we took up donations and bought
this shelter a scanner.
