Hi Christine,

I am using MSM and Glucosamine/Chondroitin (Spring Valley brand from Wal
Mart came recommended by someone who said she had tried them all. It isn't
very expensive either.) for Greta. She is 125 pounds and gets pretty much
the recommended human dose. I would figure the dose by weight. Sven took
Rimadyl, but he was old and dying, and it really relieved a lot of his pain.
I would try to avoid it whenever possible because it seems to sometimes have
some serious side effects. It is remarkably effective, but I really think
it ought to be a last resort. Other things that I have used that work are
yucca powder and devil's claw. Yucca powder can be bought in capsules, but
also can be bought by the pound for a great deal less money. It tastes
innocuous and doesn't have to be in capsules (the powder can be added to
their food). It has some of the effects of steroids, but not the side
effects. It should only be used when there is a problem, although I have
used it long term. I had a dachshund with degenerating disks in her spine
and it prevented her pain. I believe it gave her an extra year of life. I
use it also whenever something hurts that is related to bones or muscles.
Devil's claw has to be in capsules, it is almost unbelievably bitter. It
works wonders for me for joint pains and anything like that. Both of these
take a little longer to kick in than Rimadyl does but have virtually no side
effects.
