Have someone out to educate you then.
They are dangerous if used wrong.
I grew up with woodstoves in Minnesota and the scariest noise to me is the loud 
crackling and
popping when the soot catches fire in the chimney!
I'm sure you will be fine. Maybe there is a nest blocking it or something.
But please do have SOMEONE over who knows about woodstoves.
