Indeed, this is confusing.  The problem lies in the code that we use to try
to catch errors and interperet them in a nice manner, which doesn't
distinguish between causes of errors.  Fixing this would be a good idea
(perhaps causing it to ignore errors triggered by signals), but isn't
trivial.  (So I'll leave it for someone else to do, for now).

Probably the solution involves making the unsafeInterleaveIO in
read_repo_private *not* catch certain sorts of errors.  Then such errors
won't be interpereted as failure to read the patch file.
