Oh wait a second, C. always assuming we are doing darcs whatsnew; I think I see what you meant now: in commands like darcs pull or darcs get, you most certainly do not want to do this translation. How about only doing the translation if the command is one of: record, whatsnew, annotate, changes (and friends)? Or maybe have a mechanism for identifying commands as ones which only manipulate repodir stuff?
