I'm forgoing the usual 'polite' two-week waiting period for my own
patches as (i) these only affect the test suite (ii) having a usable
test suite on Windows would be really nice. Please yell if this breaks
anything for you.
(*) Note: not all patches necessarily pass; you'll need to apply another
one of my patches for that, in queue for next week.
