This is actually something I've been known to waffle on, but I do lean
towards just trusting the hash.  And definitely having shared storage is a
real (and intended) bonus.  It also makes shared cross-repository storage
both easier and more robust (e.g. if you have two similar repositories,
they should be able to share any identical files).
