What is it not doing correctly for you?  Perhaps you could give us
more information about your computer (is it windows/linux/mac?), the
version of darcs and instructions on how to reproduce what you're
experiencing.  I've never had backspace be mishandled when using
'darcs record'.  Also, there is a command line option, -m, to set the
patch name.

So you could do:
darcs record -m "This is my patch name and backspace handling will be
done by my shell"

Then record the changes you want and you should be good to go.
