Maybe it's included in your first point, but low starting threshold

I think you're pretty much on target.  It's very useful in a private
repo when you record something and discover that there was a couple of
more things that belonged in that patch.  Without amend, I would have
a lot of messages like "oops, I forgot this in the last patch" in my
logs. 

But yes, if you amend or unrecord something somebody has pulled,
you're probably going to make a mess.
