I would define "small" as "the repository [== all branches] fits
comfortably on a memory stick".  I would work cd'd to the memory stick
and keep mirrors (eg, rsync) on each computer as backup.

This wouldn't work well for me (although Darcs would probably save me
in the end), because I'd push bundles and forget to pull them all the
time.  Of course, using Darcs means you rarely have to give up just
because you've pulled patches out of order, but your repositories will
require discipline to keep them in sync.

YMMV, of course, but for that reason I personally would strongly lean
to the repo-on-a-stick approach.
