Yeech.  OK, you got me.

I don't see a theoretical reason why we couldn't do without both
current and working directories.  We'd need to change the patch format
so that a patch would know its source and target trees (git implements
this, I believe, or at least it could easily do so), and then have
public "patch warehouses" rather than repositories.

I suspect that this would be rather fragile at first, so it's probably
not worth doing at this point, but it's too elegant to say nothing. :-)
