I think a hashed inventory will go a long way towards eliminating this sort
of problem, and I've been talking with Isaac Jones about a halfs (which is
currently unreleased software, but is basically a filesystem implemented in
haskell, which can be backed by a file) based pristine cache. These two
changes (both of which are just waiting on someone with time and energy to
implement them) will go a long way towards reducing the ease with which
darcs repositories can be corrupted.
