I'm afraid this requires some repository surgery.  It's much nicer to catch
corruption like this early on rather than late in the game.  If this is a
repository I could take a look at, I might be able to fix it by editing the
patches.

The easy solution (but not necesarily better for you) would be to abandon
your old history.
