One way to explain it is that the relevant bits under _darcs
*change* in a very complicated way whenever you do something to
the repo. The only safe way to merge something from one repo
to another, is with darcs or some tool that understands this
complicated patch algebra. Other tools can't merge/sync darcs
repos, they only can do a complete replace (as Jamie already
explained). So you should in practise move your repo around by
copying it (in full), and a properly used syncing tool can do
it more efficiently by only transferring the differing parts.
