Just to be clear: If you use 1.0.3 on both ends, it works, but after
upgrading one end to 1.0.4?

If the issue only happens with the version difference, then yes.
Otherwise, there are known things that can cause darcs to appear to
hang. This is what David Roundy is taking a break from the lists to work
on fixing. 

If the issue happens with the same version of darcs on both ends, then
check the wiki for references about what the hanging means and what to
do about. The archives of this list have references as well.

Although it's not ideal, usually darcs recovers well if you need to
cancel at this point.

Only 4 patches are still enough to create a conflict that can cause
darcs to hang.
