One of our developers says that we could design our own custom shell

Very interesting idea. I have been told that just by chrooting the
problem would be solved, but I couldn't grasp this one yet. Have you
been able to test it already?
Slight confusion on my part. The custom shell suggestion is an
alternative to chroot, not a complement to. We'd make the user's "home"
be the directory with the repo and give them that custom shell.
From what he says, chroot is more secure but more hassle in the long
term. And he thinks that for our purpose, a custom shell is better.
Can you share your results on this issue? I am indeed very interested
on it and think the Darcs community will win a lot with your
experience. Maybe this custom shell could even be bundled with the
main darcs download.
I'll give a shout here when we have something to show.
Cheers,
Daniel.
