I guess the only thing to do is let this sit on our mental back burners until somebody else gets an idea or runs into the same problem.

No, I guess not.

I had an idea that trac+darcs to be as self-managing by the projects as possible. For example, it should be possible for a project to move or remove their darcs directory, and I didn't want the trac_cache thing getting in the way. But this is a very minor issue.

Besides, there's lots of stuff projects can't do on their own yet, like configuring their trac environment.
