Leeds me to another question : what is 'repair' checking after ? and
what causes repos to get corrupted ?
Repair will apply all the patches stored in the repository, and make
sure the pristine tree matches this. Repositories can be corrupted
through darcs bugs (hopefully rare), files in pristine not being
writeable (can happen especially in multiuser setups when the file
permissions are wrong), darcs being killed halfway through a pull, and
possibly some other things.
