A dry run push, pull gives me the info -- it even works to dry run push 
against http, which I wasn't expecting it to until I tried.

As I'm really only interested in getting a list, rather than performing a 
sync, I'd be more likely to write something to give a 'git show-branch' 
style output - I've become quite fond of that style.

Something like this:

 +---- branch 1
  +--- branch 2
   +-- branch 3
 ===========
 *     patch that is in branch 1 only
  *    patch that is in branch 2 only
  **   patch that is in branch 2 and 3
 ***   patch that is in all brances
