Okay, back to an older complete version sounds good to me. Do you use
a separate system of automated backups, then? I must confess I stopped
making frequent backups when I started using darcs, as I supposed it
could recreate a whole prior version.

(Do other version control systems have that capability?)

Well, usually when going back to an older version I find it better to go
back to a complete version of the older source code, rather than just
looking at one file, since most confusing changes involve multiple
files...
