I read man 1 ssh and figured out that when using non-interactive SSH

Really? This was how I used to understand things, but then some other
people had different experiences and I changed my mind. Perhaps these
people just had non-default sshd configurations as you suggest?
I have a simple unix account on a machine and simply uncommenting the
.bashrc "local bin" lines (adds ~/bin to the PATH) and placing a link to
darcs in that directory appears to be all I needed to do. This is
trying to backtrack through files in my home directory (because I don't
remember), so I may be missing something small and fiddly that I did to
get things to work. (Sometimes *nix's small and fiddly bits worry me.)
