Uhm, but a tag isn't strictly needed, you can specify an hash as start-revision... My "common-point" was an abstract concept: despite of their different histories, there must clearly be a point in time where the two repositories contains the same sources in the same state. I'd try to find out the last patch already present in the new repo, determine the *next* patch hash which I'd use as start-revision... But as said, I'm just letting my mouth chatting...
