Hey Zooko, thanks for the report.

Just out of curiosity, does he know about context files?  If so does he 
not find them sufficient?

I still think that right now the best documentation on context files is 
my own blog post:

But since I've been contributing darcs patches for documentation, I 
should probably add this to my list of things to figure out how to better.

Basically, for the make version step he wants you simply perform some 
variation on:

darcs changes --context > this_version.context

This is pretty fast in my experience (possibly the fastest changes 
flag).  Given a copy of that file you can simply:

darcs get --context this_version.context http://remote.example.org/repo/

It's not "copy the short garbage-looking number into an IM window", it's 
"send me your version.context file", but it works (and it's what darcs 
itself builds into --exact-version, hence the reason bug reports ask for 
--exact-version).
