Ah I just noticed that you were using a matcher.  If you just did darcs
show contents on a file without the matcher, it should be instantaneous
(since we have the latest recorded version in pristine).  Otherwise, it
may be useful to check if darcs show contents works by applying patches
'forward' or unapplying patches backwards.  The latter option (which is
how darcs get --match works) may be more sensible if people tend to use
darcs show contents to look up relatively recent versions of files.
