That's quite a fair request, one which I *think* the show repo command
fulfills.

Ah, my understanding here is that show repo does not print out any
prefs which are unset, which makes me think than an (unfortunately
more elaborate) way to go might be:

  (darcs show repo | grep boringfile) || echo _darcs/prefs/boring
