Sorry for the late reply, I forgot I was still tracking this thread.

I was not proposing that darcs should ignore whitespace, just that intra-line whitespace changes could possibly be merged with changes to non-whitespace characters.

Also, just to be clear, never did I have the intention of enforcing whitespace rules through the VCS, just tracking the whitespace changes more explicitly.

I knew that it would probably be a complex issue that may only be applicable to some cases, so I was mainly interested to know what people with an understanding of patch theory thought of the idea.
