Modern POSIX BREs have ? -- it's just escaped. The ERE
(\.[[:digit:]]+)?
is equivalent to the BRE
\(\.[[:digit:]]\+\)\?

It could well have come about because I was tired and using Emacs'
regexp-opt instead of using my brain.
