I this turned out to be related to a change I made locally to my darcs. I made it so that darcs would exit cleanly after X minutes. This made it possible to get profiling dumps of things that would otherwise hang. What I didn't think about, was that it also ensures that darcs will run for at least X minutes, just doing nothing but sleeping. Hence the hanging I was seeing. Mystery solved. Sorry for the noise.
