Are you specifically asking about rollback -p or --match or just the
behaviour of the interactive UI? [it's actually the same thing under
the hood].  Does this help?

More importantly can we improve the documentation?

Even more importantly, can we improve Darcs to avoid the need for
documentation?  This is one of the more surprising aspects of the Darcs
