That appears to be exactly the problem! Due to my own mistake, _/dracs/prefs/sources contains a entry mentioning an account that does not exist on the server anymore. The repository works alright after I remove that entry. The problem should have gone away if I simply do darcs get again to create a new repository. I don't know why I didn't try that.
