Mel's Weekly Mountain Biking Tip...... (without license from JMBC's
newsletter)

Shoot Your Troubles while Pedalling (by Brian Lopes - one of history's
greatest 4X mountain bikers)

Problem: Your legs burn, especially at the beginning of your ride.

Solution: Warm up. Take it easy for 10 minutes or so then gradually up
the intensity. Lions don't warm up before they run down antelopes, but
they don't run for hours, now do they?

Problem: Your quads are getting really tired.

Solution: Move back in the saddle and concentrate on pushing forward and
pulling back. This emphasizes your glutes and ham strings and provides a
bit of rest for your four best friends.

Problem: You're struggling and you feel uncomfortable on a climb.

Solution: Pay attention to your form. Open your upper body, lighten your
hands and spin smooth circles. This can make a huge difference. That
said, if you are going super hard or you're out of shape, it's gonna
hurt. Welcome to cycling.

Problem: When you climb out of the saddle, your triceps get tired from
leaning on the bars.

Solution: Move your hips back so your weight moves exclusively to your
feet. For extended climbing, rest yours hands neutrally on the bars. For
max power, pull on the bars for each downstroke.

Problem: Your chain falls off on downhills.

Solution: Descend in your big chainring and one to the middle of your
larger cogs. Remove links until your chain is barely long enough for
your big ring/big cog combo. If the tighter chain does not do the
trick., think about installing a chain guide.

Problem: You feel tired and weak.

Solution: You are tired and weak. Get off your butt and train. But don't
overdo it, or you will dig yourself a deeper hole.
