*NO BUSINESS INDUSTRY* as a whole has the right *EVER* to fix prices as
a group to screw the consumers to line their own pockets.

When retailers meet in secret with distributors to decide to up their
margins, it is ILLEGAL and IMMORAL.

We already know that we get *BAD SERVICE* from most of the LBS's. It's a
fact of life like dying, paying tax and upgrading your PC.

That's why we should all pitch in on a monthly basis and get Gordon on a
retainer.

The only defense we have is to spend the LBS's time and effort, make
them phone around for options and stuff, get advice, then go and buy
from Solomon's or Chainreaction.

And that, too, is not right.

Any business has to make a decent profit, otherwise it goes out of
business. If it provides GOOD service, it is entitled to sell at a
higher margin. It is up to the buyer to decide how much the good service
and hence the higher price is worth. If you have the skills, time and
inclination to do without service, buy from a cheap online shop,
otherwise pay more to get the service.

It will be useful to identify LBSs giving VALUE and not just low prices.
But then value, just like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder :)

Between Chris Willemse (http://www.cwcycles.co.za/shop.html) and

get shafted everytime you buy from a LBS.

PIGS. Well I never buy from CycleLab anyway, and I've just dropped any
current or future support for Fritz Pienaar.

There's many left to buy from. Maybe chainreaction.co.uk...!

Maintenance / support is pathetic anyway.

Werner: Can you post Andrew's response (apology) please?

There's a link to the Hub but many of us don't have access:

Margins in the bicycling industry - Fritz Pienaar and Andrew Mclean
Fritz Pienaar
Welcome everyone, thank you for attending this meeting. First of all I
would just like to say that this meeting is not aimed at the
wholesalers, but the wholesalers do play a part and it them that created
the concern that retailers are not making enough money, and that this
leads to their accounts not being paid.
I would just like to say that everyone agrees in principle with raising
the margins in the cycling retail industry, we have support from many
retails, whom have phoned or contacted me personally to say that they
are behind the decision and that it's time something like this occurs.
Ie. Bowman's, Hatton cycles
Wholesalers all agree in principle that this is needed.
