During this evening's visit Mathilda responded to specific questions by either nodding her head or frowning (especially when I mentioned to her that she had been asleep for almost 3 weeks). Although she is still extremely tired and battles to stay awake, she definitely recognises me and understands my questions and is in a position to respond. She is not yet able to speak as she still has the ventilator and food tubes down her throat. These will most probably come out tomorrow, when thesurgeon does the trachiotomy, which is very common in cases like these where the patient is not fully awake, but is taken off the ventilator. Courage is not the absence of fear or despair, but the strength to conquer them!
