Baggy pants. They provide decent coverage to grandfathers, but they
are, well, baggy. And prone to catching on pointed objects; for
instance the tip of a bike saddle. And if that happens when a rider is
attempting a drop-off from a standstill, said rider may have problems
moving his weight backwards with the almost inevitable result of a
forward flip also known as an endo.

But it was not this little incident at the top of Roetter's Route that
earned me the privilege of writing this report. A little way back just
after Bat tunnel on the steep tar part, I had problems changing gears
with ominous screeching sounds emanating from the chain. Just before
it broke. Fortunately Stealth was at hand to fix it, but had some
problems with all the mud. Oh, I did not mention: It was wet. And
muddy. The continuous rain of the previous two days had almost
completely stopped, but it was still wet. And slippery. After the
chain was fixed and threaded correctly, although QT was sceptical
about that, it was still not turning freely and some bending had to be
done.

It was then that the penny dropped: Just before Bat tunnel I was
riding on this sloping trail. It was wet. And muddy. And slippery. You
can guess what happened next. That, however, was not the cause of me
having to write the ride report.

The rain had stopped and seven knights of the night ignored the fact
that it would still be wet and muddy. As Hardy was still away on his
hike of the Otter trail, QT had to represent the household and she was
assisted by Power Girl and D1. The less fairer sex consisted of Gadget
who lead, Stealth who sweeped, Mummy, back from Vietnam with bike
fixed and your's truly clad in baggy pants.

Stealth had forgotten to bring his helmet along and QT would not hear
of him proceeding without it. She was supported by the rest of the
group: No helmet, no ride. We decided to pick one up from Gadget's
abode. His remote control was not working and after getting his
neighbour to open the gate, the rest of us parked in a row to break
the beam and keep the gate open. An arriving resident was quite scared
by the clothed from top to bottom, helmeted, lighted-bike straddling
cohort blocking the entrance and passed with wide, wild eyes.

One would expect Gadget to know the trails close to his home like the
palm of his hand, but fact is that he took a wrong turn and we had to
turn back. It was on this turn that I discovered that the road was
really wet, muddy and slippery and the cause of me having to pain you
reading this report.

There is more to tell, but I'll conclude by stating that we did
exactly 25 kms and that it was, as always, thoroughly enjoyable.

Oupa Gert.
