:-( very Sad and Tragic article on news24.

Pretoria – Major Estelle de Bruyn, 35 of army headquarters in Pretoria
decided to quit cycling after she was hit by a truck in January. On
Sunday morning, her husband was killed in a cycling accident.

She had told her husband Gerhard, 39, that morning that she had been
considering taking up cycling again.

A few hours later, she found him next to the road outside Rayton after
he had been hit by a car which had been overtaking another car.

De Bruyn and a friend, Anke Zenker, 32, had cycled to Cullinan to get
some exercise. Major De Bruyn met them in Cullinan for coffee.

On the safest part of the road

On their way back, at around 12:00, she drove behind them, but stopped
in Rayton to buy water.

"They still cycled past me," she said tearfully on Monday.

"They were cycling behind each other on the shoulder of the road. They
were on the safest part of the road that they could be. I had only
just set off again, when I saw them lying in the road. I screamed,
because I knew it was my husband.

"I could see he was very badly hurt. When I touched him, I could feel
that all his ribs were broken. Never in my life have I prayed so
much."

Police spokesperson Johannes Jaftha said a woman had allegedly
overtaken another car. When she was back in her lane, she had struck
De Bruyn and Zenker. Apparently she didn't see them.

Zenker was taken by helicopter to the Netcare Milpark hospital in
Johannesburg. Her father, Jochen Zenker, said she was still under
strong sedation.

De Bruyn was taken to the Wilgers hospital in Pretoria. He was later
transferred to 1 Military Hospital in Thaba Tshwane where he died from
his injuries at about 16:00.

He had sustained serious head injuries, and his ribs, right shoulder
and right elbow were broken.

Devastated

Just after her own accident in January on the R21 highway in Pretoria,
his wife resolved never to climb on a bicycle again.

On Monday she had to have stitches removed from her hand, after
needing an operation due to having spent four months on crutches.

"I'll never cycle again. On that morning I told him to be careful
about 30 times," she said.

"His last hug was not enough. I love him so much."

Her husband ran his own flooring business.
